Pregnancy Week 11

How to Get Pregnant

Only one more week to go before the second trimester begins! This is a great time for mom and dad because many of the horrible ups and downs they have been experiencing during the first trimester will be diminishing by the time pregnancy week 11 comes along. There may be a bit of discomfort for mom in the latter months, but there is still some time to go. The second trimester offers both mom and dad a bit of time to take a deep breath and enjoy the calm.

Changes in the Mother's Body

A mother's uterus, at pregnancy week 11 is just about the size of a small grapefruit. Her appetite is probably getting better and better as she leaves her first trimester. It is almost certain that in most cases, the morning sickness will be either gone, or on its way out by now. She still may find that certain odors bother her, and the blotchiness that appeared on her skin last week is probably still evident. Her breasts will still be a bit tender, but over all, toward the second trimester she should begin to feel much better. She may be showing by now, if not, it won't be long before she is.

Development of the Baby

The embryo is now called a fetus! The most significant element of the baby's development is over. From here on out the growth of the fetus will be very rapid. At pregnancy week 11 the baby is approximately 1 inch in length, but by the time week 12 is entered, the fetus will have grown a whole inch! Half of the length of the baby right now is his/her head. This is about the time that the baby's eyes temporarily fuse shut to allow irises to develop. At some point between pregnancy week 11 and week 12, the baby's blood will start to circulate between the uterus and the baby as the placenta begins to function.

Diet and Exercise

Mom is still to be careful to eat enough to feed both her and her unborn baby. In most cases, she will not need prodding to do so, as she will more than likely be hungry enough on her own. She should be drinking at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day to keep her hydrated and to allow sufficient liquid to aid in passing nutrients on to her baby. Several small meals per day may be better as time goes by, and snacking on healthy foods between meals is fine and even suggested. It is important for a pregnant woman to stay as active as possible to prevent herself from getting out of shape.

Tips for Dads

Most dads will be going stir crazy right about now. With all the ups and downs and mood swings, not to mention watching their wife turn green and run to the bathroom several times a day for the past 2 months, they might be close to pulling their hair out. Pregnancy week 11 will bring a little relief to mom, so dad should take advantage of this time to go out and spend some quality guy time, fishing, golfing, hunting or whatever it is he likes to do. After all, both moms and dads need a break sometimes.

Pregnancy week 11 is also a good time to begin asking care providers if there are any necessary prenatal tests that are recommended. Sometimes women who are over a certain age will be good candidates for procedures such as amniocentesis. Even if tests are required, most of the time everything turns out just fine.
