How to Get Pregnant

Almost everyone has met someone who has met someone who had a period during pregnancy. However, this is impossible. The menstrual cycle in a woman takes place to prepare the body for conception. However, it is possible to experience mild to moderate blood loss during pregnancy as a direct result of incubation. The experience can be scary and cause lots of stress to expecting parents since blood flow is supposed to stop upon conception. There are a few reasons why this type of bleeding may occur, with some of them potentially harmful to the unborn baby.

Placenta Attaching to Uterine Wall

During pregnancy the body forms what is called a placenta, which is an organ fabricated by the human body to provide the unborn child with nutrients and oxygen. It also serves as a type of filter, taking on the functions of a mature human's liver, removing toxins and waste from your baby's blood. Placenta previa occurs when the placenta attaches to the lower part of the uterine wall, either partially or totally covering the cervix. As the cervix begins to open the placenta detaches and can trigger moderate to severe vaginal flow. The symptoms can also be intermittent. This can give the impression of a period and, understandably, cause a certain amount of confusion. However placenta previa is a condition that generally occurs in the second to third trimester.

Placenta Peels away from Uterine Wall

Placental abruption occurs when the placenta peels away from the walls of the uterus. Symptoms are nearly identical to a normal period. Cramping in the lower stomach, back and legs, as well as a bloated feeling are not uncommon side effects of this condition. This of course, can lead to the misconception that a period is occurring. This can be extremely dangerous to the unborn baby. As a result of the separation the placenta loses some functionality and can deprive the fetus of vital nutrients and oxygen. This is a quite serious condition and will require immediate attention. If left untreated both baby and mother could suffer serious consequences.

Normal Blood Flow

During the first trimester, the placenta is formed within the uterus. The placenta is basically a new organ which will require blood, oxygen and nutrients in order to function properly. As a result of this process blood flow is increased to the uterus in order to facilitate the growth of both baby and placenta. This can cause mild spotting that is both harmless and normal. As this happens early on during pregnancy it can be mistaken easily for a part of the menstrual cycle and written off as just another period.

Whatever the cause of bleeding during pregnancy, this condition should always be checked by a doctor to ensure that nothing that is potentially harmful to the baby is occurring. It is impossible to be pregnant with period, and as such any vaginal bleeding should be attended to by a health care professional to determine the cause. As there are numerous other potential causes ranging from uterine and cervical cancer, to ruptured blood vessels, all necessary precautions should be taken to be sure that your baby is in good health and no in danger.
